Tactical games separate the men from the boys and the short-attention span crowd from the thinker.
Why? It's not easy to keep tabs on dozens of specialized units and make sure they are doing what they are supposed to and living up to their full potential.

Everyone should know the difference between real-time and turn-based strategy games.
Turn-based strategy games are usually on some kind of grid and you take turns building your army, training it, and kicking butt. Some good examples are Final Fantasy Tactics, Front Mission 3, Galactic Civilizations, and Sid Meier's Civilization series.
Real-time strategy games allow you and your opponent to do things simultaneously. Good examples are Warcraft, Starcraft, or Supreme Commander.
